Transferring Files using FTP

What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a method of moving files from your own PC (where you may have written, developed or debugged them) to the server where your website is hosted.  These files become the pages of which your website is comprised.

Using FTP you can upload files from your PC to your website, download files from your website to your PC, delete or rename files on your website, change file permissions, operate on blocks of files, and much more.

To prevent unauthorised access to your files, you will be allocated an FTP address, username and password by your host.

What software do I need and where can I get it?
You will only need an FTP Client program (this will talk to another program called an FTP Server, already installed on the computer hosting your website).

There are many of these programs on the market, and all will no doubt work well enough, but I personally prefer a program called Filezilla, written by the Mozilla people.  This is a fine FTP client, and being open source it also has the advantage of being FREE to download and use.

You can get it HERE
