I posted a while ago about protecting sheets or ranges in Google Sheets. Google has improved the sheet and range protection in Sheets, to include the ability to protect a whole sheet except for a given range.
This can be useful when you want your collaborators to only have edit capabilities for a few cells. Take a look at this sheet:
I want to allow colleagues to fill in measurement data (the green colored range) but not edit the rest of the sheet. First, I select Data > Protected sheets and ranges…:
Now I select Sheet in the sidebar, check Except certain cells, and make sure the range is correct:
A dialog opens, in which I can further tweak the user permissions on the protected area. Note that the ‘range’ mentioned in the dialog is NOT the selected range (here B1:B7), but rather the protected range, i.e. the whole sheet except B1:B7:
And finally, the whole sheet is protected except for the chosen range, which my collaborators can edit:
