Hypertext Links in Google Sheets

When you paste a URL into a cell in Google Spreadsheets, it automatically becomes a hyperlink:

However, if you want to add a link with anchor text that still lets you navigate to the URL, things are a little more tricky. You need to use a little bit of code.

Enter this formula:

=HYPERLINK(“[URL]”, “[anchor text]”)

replacing [URL] with the URL website you wish to navigate to (in our example above, the Google homapge) and [anchor text] with the anchor text you want to appear in the link.

Note that http:// isn’t required in the URL parameter:

=HYPERLINK("www.google.com", "Google Homepage")

Here’s the final link:

Note: the new Google Sheets, which we’ll all be using soon, have some additional ways of forming links, which are discussed here.
